When San Diego’s New Children’s Museum approached us about an edible garden exhibit, we wanted to design something totally unique and worthy of the museum’s reputation. Bicycle wheel trellises, a passion vine tunnel, and raised beds in the shape of “ART” pushed the boundaries of traditional garden structure. A dedicated digging bed for the museum’s little passersby offered endless fun, while the sensory garden benches surrounded by aromatic herbs were perfect for a family picnic.
Last year the garden showcased the museum’s California-themed “Eureka!” exhibit. Each bed highlighted top crops grown in California counties along Interstate 5 such as wheat, garlic, and celery. Set in downtown San Diego, the resulting garden was truly a fine example of urban gardening catering to our youngest friends!
